Albert O. Edwards, MD, PhD, specializes in diseases and surgery of the retina. His mission is to provide the highest quality care for you using up to date knowledge, treatments and techniques with compassion in caring for you.

Dr. Edwards moved to Eugene in 2009 from Rochester, MN where he was on the faculty of the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Edwards focuses on medical treatment and surgery for diseases of the retina, vitreous, and uvea. These diseases include macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachments and membranes, uveitis or inflammation of the eye, eye tumors, and many other conditions. Dr. Edwards can care for your eyes himself or provide you with a second opinion to give you confidence in your treatment plan with other doctors.

Dr. Edwards grew up in Texas. He attended the University of Houston and graduated Summa Cum Laude with University Honors. He received his MD and PhD as a National Scientist Training Fellow from Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Edwards completed five years of training in Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. He has fellowship training in medical retina, ophthalmic genetics, uveitis, and vitreoretinal surgery. He received a number of honors during his training including research and travel awards as well as the prestigious Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship.

Dr. Edwards is an internationally respected physician and scientist who has made numerous scientific discoveries advancing the care of patients with eye disease. These discoveries include the identification of genes for macular degeneration and Fuchs corneal dystrophy. Dr. Edwards has published over 74 scientific papers, given over 200 lectures and presentations, and is a member of eye and scientific professional organizations. He has received a number of honors for this work including Career Development Awards, listing in Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and the Annual Trustee Award of the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

Dr. Edwards enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter in Eugene. He enjoys a variety of outdoor activities including cycling and mountain biking.
